Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used in manufacturing for heat- and fire-resistant properties. It can also make its way into water supplies from naturally-occurring sources or aging water pipes made from a combination of cement and asbestos. Homes built before 1980 may still have some of these pipes. As they deteriorate, asbestos can enter the household water supply.
Consumption of any asbestos should be avoided, as it has been linked to mesothelioma, a devastating type of lung, heart or abdomen cancer. The Environmental Working Group has estimated that asbestos in all forms is killing as many as 10,000 people each year and further notes that there is no safe level of exposure to this mineral.
Rule out the possibility of asbestos in your well water or city water supply with accurate asbestos testing for water.
