Radon is an invisible, odorless radioactive gas that can enter homes via water or air. It is naturally-occurring and present in most areas of the United States.
Radon gas is emitted from rocks and soil and makes its way through small cracks or holes. If not properly vented from the structure, this gas can then accumulate in the home to unhealthy levels. When radon is present in a water supply, it can also enter the air of a home when the water is used for cooking or showering. Airborne radon levels are usually higher in lower levels of a home so two radon in air vials are recommended for multi-level homes.
Over time, exposure to radon gas increases one’s risk of lung cancer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon causes an estimated 21,000 cases of lung cancer each year.
It is important to know if your home or water supply is contaminated with radon. Radon levels can be mitigated, but protection starts with radon testing.
